In July of 1955 full sized line drawing then airbrushed renderings were made to pin down ideas for serious consideration. By November of 1955 literally hundreds of ideas have been proposed, accepted, rejected, changed tried in clay, modeled in wood, drawn full size and drawn on tiny scraps of paper. All to ensure that every design had "the GM look".

In order to accurately visualize the complete design, a number of finely detailed fiberglass prototype cars were made up in the Styling Section shops. By May of 1956, the 1958 Chevrolet was done for all practical purposes, the styling phase was complete. The results you can see in the 50 classic magazine and Chevrolet brochure images on this web site. What do you think of the 1958 Chevrolet? Despite being a recession year, consumers made Chevrolet No.1 and the Impala was at the center of Chevy's popularity.

The 1955, 1956 and 1957 Chevrolets were called "The Hot One's" but in the summer of 1958, Chevy unveiled the lower, wider and longer '58 Chevrolet. From the very first glimpse of the spectacular new Chevrolets you would catch a hint of the exciting Sculpturamic Styling! "From road to roof it brings you glamour, new performance, a wonderful new floating way of going" said one 1958 Chevy Belair ad. "It happens in 17 stunning models, from the incomparable Impala, scarcely shoulder high, to a corral full of glamorous new station wagons" said another. The new twin driving lights were a first and there was a new wrap around windshield.
